Julie Russell-Steuart, editor/printer of Caveworks Press, is a fine artist and writer.
She makes work in a range of mediums, including (but never limited to) drawing, painting, printmaking, installation, video, photography, computer graphic design, and artist’s books. She is a graduate of Maryland Institute, College of Art. More often than not, her work combines writing and imagery, and explores the nexus of meaning that arises from their joining.

She has had a painting on tour as part of the “We Protest” group show. Click here to see it archived at Altered Esthetics in Minneapolis.

During and after a poetry class at the University of Northern Iowa, she worked at The North American Review, a literary magazine, where she got an introduction to selecting poetry for publication. It was there that she solidified her desire to publish poetry as a serious venture with her letterpress.

As a writer, Julie had a mild fling with journalism, writing freelance for local newspapers and even as the de facto editor of two for a short while. Her essay “Hearing bill needs work” won a spot in the Des Moines Register’s Young Adult Editorial Board for a year.

For the last year she has been writing for Artscene,
Iowa’s monthly arts publication, and is at home there, writing about what she loves best while promoting the arts. For articles see links page.

Caveworks Press was covered by Ronald Scott Adkins for Artscene in July 2007. Read his terrific article here.

A multimedia piece entitled “Flying After,” created shortly after the 9-11 bombings was created for the website show “Beyond 9-11, the Art of Renewal in Iowa” that featured artists in Iowa responding to the event.
For interview, poem text and a video clip, click image.

The piece also went to the James and Meryl Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls, Iowa as part of another show that reflected on those events, Who We Were Then, Who We Are Now,” and won an Honorable Mention.

At the 2003 Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival, “Flying After” won First Place in the Master Freestyle category.
