Artist Profile

Julie Russell-Steuart grew up in Maryland and earned a BFA in General Fine Art from Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her work encompasses multiple mediums with a particular interest the synthesis of word and image. She has shown printmaking, installation, artist’s books, painting, and experimental video. Her video poem, “Flying After” was awarded First Place in the Master Freestyle category at the 2002 Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival. She publishes letterpress poetry broadsides, prints, and artist’s books on a vintage Vandercook printing press under the imprint Caveworks Press. A Kluge platen press, guillotine paper cutter and nine type cabinets full of metal typefaces and various antique cuts round out her print shop. Her books are collected by several University libraries, including The University of Iowa,  Texas State University, and the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library at the University of Kentucky. 
Her print “The Arctic Tern Never Rests :: Ephemera No. 3” was a Merit Award winner in the Summer 2020 show “Iowa Exhibited XXXV” Polk County Heritage Gallery.
